Compare blocked accounts, health insurance, and other essential financial services for moving to Germany — with transparent, evidence-based recommendations.
This decides which financial proof applies to you.
Transfer rules and processing differ by country.
Age changes which health insurance you are eligible for — this matters more than most students realise.
Pick one. We give that factor extra weight in the Fineura Score.
Providers differ here, and neither approach is better — it depends what you want.

Fineura recommendations are based on your answers and independently researched provider data. Affiliate commissions do not influence rankings and are not an input to this calculation. Provider data last verified September 2026.

Independent comparisons · Published scoring methodology · Data verified and dated
Moving to Germany often means arranging a blocked account, health insurance, and other essential services before or shortly after arrival. Fineura helps international students compare these options using published criteria, verified data, and transparent scoring — so you can make the decision that fits your situation.
Compare costs, processing times, refund policies, support, and other important criteria.
Understand public and private student insurance options, eligibility, costs, and coverage.
Get a personalized overview of the financial steps you may need to complete before and after arrival.
Moving to Germany shouldn't require twenty browser tabs, four contradictory Facebook groups, and a €11,904 decision made at two in the morning.
Fineura is not a blog and not a bank. It is the decision layer between you and the financial products you need before you land.
Five questions: why you're coming, where from, your age at enrolment, what matters most, and how you want your German bank account handled. No account needed.
We weight the Fineura Score around your priority and show exactly which evidence supports each factor — including what we could not verify.
Save your plan and get a checklist running from visa proof through insurance, Anmeldung and your first German bank account.
Price alone is a poor way to choose a financial product you will depend on for a year. The Fineura Score weighs seven factors — and where we cannot verify a factor, we exclude it and say so rather than filling the gap with a guess.
Scored on the five factors verified so far. Support and user experience are excluded until we can source them properly.
Fintiba, Expatrio and Coracle came under a single parent group in May 2025. They remain separate companies with separate banking partners, but they no longer compete with each other on price — and one of them is currently closed to new customers.
| Provider | Taking new applications? | First-year service fees | Status detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expatrio | Yes | €227.00 | Banking partner UniCredit. The branch entity changes on 1 November 2026; existing accounts are unaffected. |
| Fintiba | Yes | €277.80 | Setup fee rose from €89 to €159 in November 2025. Not available to US citizens. |
| Coracle | Paused | — | Not accepting new blocked account applications during a stated banking system upgrade. Existing customers are unaffected and their accounts remain active. |
Status verified against each provider's own published pages on 4 September 2026. Coracle has not announced a reopening date, and we re-check fortnightly — if you are working to a visa deadline, plan around the two providers currently open. This page is updated when a status changes. Compare Fintiba and Expatrio in detail →
Comparison sites argue over a €50 difference in setup fees. Meanwhile the health insurance you also need costs several times more across a year — and for most students it starts automatically at enrolment.
| Across your first year | Setup | Monthly × 12 | Total | When you pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blocked account service — Expatrio | €119.00 | €108.00 | €227.00 | Setup before the visa, then €9 each month |
| Blocked account service — Fintiba | €159.00 | €118.80 | €277.80 | Setup before the visa, then €9.90 each month |
| Public health insurance — BARMER, age 23+ | — | €1,755.48 | €1,755.48 | €146.29 each month, from enrolment |
The blocked deposit itself — €11,904 — is not shown here: that is your own money, released back to you monthly after you arrive. The figures above are service fees only. Roughly six to eight euros of insurance for every one euro of blocked account service. Choose the account carefully — but understand the insurance before you sign anything. The blocked account is one line on a long list. Fineura keeps the rest of it — visa proof, insurance, Anmeldung, residence permit, your first German bank account — in a single checklist that knows your arrival date.
